Online reservation systems can be a bit of a challenge for older people. I guess we’ll just have to get used to them. I was also a bit confused when ordering coffee at Hakuba Sanso Sky Plaza because it was done on a touchscreen. I’ll probably be able to do it on my own next year.

I was finally able to stay at the Hakuba Mountain Lodge, a place I’d always dreamed of visiting. The food and views at Sky Plaza were amazing! Everyone at the lodge was so kind, the flowers all around were beautiful, and above all, I was truly grateful that they provided me with a private room. There was even a clean restroom with a Washlet. Although it’s not a place I can visit very often, I hope they’ll continue to do their best to maintain this soothing retreat high up in the mountains.

The staff were very helpful, and the facilities were clean and comfortable. Although there was an additional charge, I was very satisfied with the beef stew and desserts for dinner. I was thrilled to be able to soak up such an elegant atmosphere in a place like that. I also really liked the oyaki for breakfast—it was delicious.

On the day of the hike, the sole of my shoe came off partway up the mountain, so I had to cancel my reservation on the spot, but I can’t thank them enough for how they handled the cancellation. For breakfast, we could get seconds of rice and miso soup, but I was told to get back in line behind the people who arrived after me. Since I had a departure time to meet, I gave up and just ate the side dishes. I thought it might be a good idea to have a staff member dedicated to serving seconds. At breakfast, the people at my table mentioned that if the manju were packaged, they could serve as trail snacks—and I completely agree.

I've been thinking this for a while, but I think the quality of the meals is very poor. I'd like to see some improvements.

The restrooms were very clean. Free water. The view of Mt. Tsurugi was spectacular. The story told by the founder’s great-grandchild was interesting. Next time, I’d like to have a bento for breakfast and watch the sunrise from the summit.

For a mountain hut located so high up, the dinner was quite a feast. I was surprised by how many ingredients were in the pork miso soup.
