[Overall Impression] This is a mountain hut that’s rare these days—one focused primarily on the operators’ convenience, with little regard for hospitality. [Sleeping Arrangements] Each section sleeps six people. The mattresses—which appear to be custom-made and about shoulder-width—are so cramped that you’d think they could only fit five, even if everyone squeezed in. Although the sleeping areas are separated from the hallway by thin curtains, when someone walks down the hallway to use the restroom at night, the vibrations are felt, and the light from their headlamp shines in. Naturally, this makes for a restless night’s sleep. While I understand that the switch to a reservation-only system and the increase in lodging fees are the result of reducing occupancy limits to ensure space and prevent infections since the pandemic, this lodge has taken no infection prevention measures, yet its prices are on par with—or even higher than—those of lodges that have implemented such measures. [Store] Despite it being noon on the first day of a three-day weekend in October, they were reportedly out of canned beer. Even at noon, they close the curtains without any prior notice or signage and stop serving, so it’s unclear when you’re actually supposed to buy something. If you need to visit the store, I wish they’d consider posting a sign saying something like, “Please call out here.” [Meals] Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. During dinner, we were simply told that guests must arrive at the lodge by 4:00 PM. I heard there was someone who arrived at 4:30 p.m., but if it was just a reminder, wouldn’t it have been better to address that person directly? I understand the desire to issue a reminder, but since it was a once-in-a-lifetime dinner, I thought it would have been better to combine the reminder with a brief introduction to the mountain. [Facilities] It was a cozy, compact lodge, but it was kept very clean.

I really appreciated the free bottled water and hot water. When I woke up in the morning, the used toilet paper had already been taken away, so it was pleasant to use the restroom.

It was a big help that they stored my luggage for me while I was hiking from Tsugaike to Funakoshi-no-Atama. I was also able to exchange various tips with other hikers. It was a bit of a shame that the windows were boarded up—since the mountain hut was about to close for the season—so I couldn’t see the view and it was quite dark inside.

We stayed at the Hakuba Oike Mountain Lodge on October 5 and the Hakuba Mountain Lodge on October 6—thank you very much for your hospitality during our two-night stay. It was a two-person hike with a friend, but our abilities were insufficient, and as a result, it took us twice as long as the standard course time. Consequently, the route from the Tsugaike Visitor Center to the Hakuba Oike Mountain Lodge on October 5 took us 7 hours, and we didn’t arrive until 6:30 p.m. We are truly sorry for causing concern and inconvenience to the staff at the lodge. That night, thanks to the guidance we received from the lodge staff, we were able to arrive at Hakuba Mountain Lodge around 3:00 PM the following day. We had planned to stay one more night at the Hakuba Oike Mountain Lodge on October 7, but since the descent from the Hakuba Mountain Lodge went relatively smoothly and we arrived at the Oike Mountain Lodge at 12:00 PM, we canceled our reservation and headed for Renge Onsen at 12:30 PM. The course was rated at 2 hours and 40 minutes, but it took us 5 hours, and we arrived at Renge Onsen Lodge at 5:30 p.m. Although it was getting dark, I am glad we arrived safely without any accidents. The staff at the lodge were very kind and allowed us to take a bath for the first time in three days. Afterward, we took a taxi to Tsugaike, departed around 10:00 p.m., and were able to return to Tokyo at 3:00 a.m. the following morning. Thank you very much. I keenly felt my lack of stamina and regret that my preparation was insufficient. Thank you.

One of the staff members called out to me from across the room, saying, “Welcome! You must be exhausted!” It made me so happy it brought tears to my eyes. That was just the beginning—the atmosphere at the mountain lodge was so wonderful that the hikers naturally fell into a friendly, relaxed vibe. It was a truly wonderful experience. The curry for dinner was a little too spicy for me, so I ended up leaving some. I’m sorry.
