    The hamburger steak I had for dinner was delicious. The dining hall had a cozy, homey atmosphere, and I felt right at home there.

    We took the gondola up from Tsugaike Kogen. Thank you for the quick reservation confirmation and helpful guidance. The hamburger steak for dinner was delicious.

    It had the atmosphere of a mountain hut from 30 years ago, with old-fashioned rooms featuring narrow futons and damp comforters. The restrooms were also old-style, including squat toilets. However, it was nice that we could use hot water and drinking water for free. We stayed at Tsugaike Hutte the day before, and even though the room rates were the same, we felt a huge difference in the facilities. We’re in our 70s, so we’re grateful they gave us a room on the lower level. I’d long looked forward to a relaxing stay at Hakuba Oike Sanso, but I wasn’t able to enjoy a pleasant and comfortable experience. Given the lodge’s location, perhaps this is just something we have to accept.

At the same time, we're sorry the dampness of the futon and the size of the room fell short of what you'd hoped for, even accounting for the challenges of being high in the mountains. Your point about the difference compared to Tsugaike Hutte is well taken. Each of our lodges differs in location and building history, so things aren't always uniform across them, but we'll take your feedback into account as we look at improvements. We're glad the free hot water and drinking water were a plus for your stay. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

    It seemed that a great deal of care had been taken in assigning rooms; not only were all-female groups accommodated, but solo guests were also paired with other solo guests whenever possible.

    The service was clean and pleasant. There were some staff members who appeared to be from overseas, but they were kind, polite, and always smiling, and their Japanese was excellent—it made me happy that they had come to the Northern Alps.

    This was my first time staying at the Hakuba Oike Mountain Lodge. I started my hike from Tsugaike Kogen, but since the steep climb from Tenguhara to Mt. Hakuba Norikura left me exhausted, I was able to rest my body thoroughly. I shared a room with another couple, and they were very considerate. Thank you very much.

    All the staff provided excellent customer service. In particular, the female staff member at the front desk was wonderful—she was polite and always had a smile on her face. Another female staff member spoke fluent English; I heard she practices conversational English with native speakers on social media late into the night, and I really admire her behind-the-scenes efforts. Thank you for keeping the facility and the bedding so clean. It would have been even better if there had been a shower.

    We set out in the rain that day, and the hike took longer than expected, so we didn’t arrive until around 6:00 PM. The staff were friendly and efficient, and they kindly provided us with helpful information about the next day’s weather and hiking distance. Both dinner and breakfast were satisfying, with generous portions and great flavor. Since we were the only group staying that night, the entire hut felt incredibly spacious, and the small drying room was able to accommodate all of our rain gear. The sleeping area was clean, the blankets were nice and thick, and the pillows were firm with just the right height. As is typical with most wooden mountain huts, footsteps from other guests can cause some vibrations and noise. Overall, however, we were highly satisfied. It is a wonderful and reassuring place to get a good night’s rest.
