I ordered breakfast and lunch boxed meals. The menu consisted of grilled beef and salmon bento boxes—a pretty decent selection. While eating my early-morning bento in the empty dining hall, I was kicked out for no apparent reason. I had no choice but to eat it in the narrow hallway. Unlike other permanent lodges, this one doesn’t have a lounge or a foyer, so this time I ate the remaining half in the hallway next to the dining hall. I’d like to see a more flexible policy—such as allowing people to eat in the dining hall or their rooms when it’s windy or raining heavily—so that there’s a place to eat.

The end of the rainy season was delayed, so I was grateful that I could change my mountain lodge reservation several times. It coincided perfectly with the end of the rainy season, so I was able to fully enjoy the breathtaking views and the hot springs. Yari Onsen Cabin is a secluded hot spring accessible only by hiking; the water quality and temperature were perfect for a tiring mountain trek. The information on the hand-drawn map at the entrance was also very helpful. However, I stayed in a shared room on the first floor, and I noticed several people bumped their heads on the beam by the entrance, so I think a slight improvement there would be nice.

I stayed here with my third-grade son. Even though you seemed very busy, you took the time to chat with my son—who couldn’t stop talking—saying things like, “That’s amazing! You’re such a strong walker,” and I was truly grateful. The bath was wonderful, and I was so happy to be able to take one in the morning. The meals were delicious, too, and it turned out to be the best mountain hike ever.

This was my second visit, and while Yari Onsen Cabin—where you can enjoy the “Heavenly Hot Springs” as often as you like—is a bit of a hike to get to, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to again and again. This time, too, I soaked three times and felt my mind and body completely rejuvenated. I imagine it must be incredibly hard work to take the cabin down every fall and rebuild it in the spring, but please keep it going as a cabin that hikers dream of visiting. Thank you for your continued efforts. Just one thing—I was surprised that hot water, which is provided free of charge to guests at other huts, is actually charged here.

It seems a bit inconvenient when the restroom is far away and the weather is bad. The open-air bath helps relieve fatigue and is very relaxing.

This was my first time staying here. I understand that there are certain compromises you have to make with a mountain lodge, but the sleeping area was a bit cramped. Also, I’d like to see some curtains—even simple ones—around the sleeping area. The restroom was too far from Building 1, and since it was dangerous in the dark, I held it in all night. It was great that the beer and chu-hai were well chilled—that really helped.

You can charge your devices here—100 yen per session, available until 7:00 p.m. For afternoon tea, they serve curry udon. You can buy beer, tea, juice, and more. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit for the hot springs. There’s a women-only bath area available.

The Hayashi Rice was delicious.
