This was the most comfortable mountain lodge I’ve ever stayed in. It was quiet and cozy enough to walk around barefoot inside, and everyone had a space about the width of a sleeping pad. Plus, if the lodge wasn’t too full when we checked in, they arranged our spots so that there was at least one bed between us and the next group. Electricity is available until 9:00 p.m., so you can charge your devices—it’s very convenient. The restrooms are indoors, so you don’t have to brave the wind and sun to use the bathroom, and some even have bidet-style toilets—it’s simply incredible. The biggest downside is the poor Wi-Fi signal; you can only get a connection near the signal booster. Dinner and breakfast were fairly ordinary, but the snacks in the cafeteria were actually quite delicious. The “Bandit-Style” burgers and Shinshu rice bowls for lunch sold out right away—what a shame.
From StaffHearing that this was the most comfortable mountain lodge you've ever stayed at truly means a lot to us. We're glad you noticed the effort to secure a full mattress-width of space per guest, and to keep some distance between groups when the lodge isn't full — that kind of quiet attention to detail is exactly what we hope guests will feel. It's wonderful that the indoor toilets and the washlet seats left such an impression too, and that's a real encouragement to our staff. Thank you for the photos as well. As for the weak Wi-Fi signal, we'll look into ways to improve coverage beyond just near the signal booster. We're sorry the Sanzoku-yaki burger and Shinshu-don sold out so early — we'll think about how to make sure more guests get the chance to try them next time. Glad you enjoyed the light dining-hall meals too. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

The special private room was 8 tatami mats in size, and the restrooms in the separate building—which had been recently renovated with flush toilets—made for an extremely comfortable and luxurious stay at the mountain hut. I’ll never forget the beef stew I enjoyed at Sky Plaza, which serves on a first-come, first-served basis. I believe this mountain hut, located on Mt. Hakuba—one of Japan’s “100 Famous Mountains”—offers the finest service of any mountain hut in the country. With its many events, it’s a special mountain lodge where I could really feel its significant presence as a leader in Japan’s mountain resort scene. It’s the kind of lodge I’ll want to visit many more times in my life.
From StaffWe're truly delighted that the special private room and the flush toilets made for such a comfortable stay. Hearing that the beef stew from Sky Plaza left a lasting impression means a great deal to the staff who prepared it. Thank you for the photos as well. Being described as offering some of Japan's finest mountain lodge service is something we take to heart. And knowing you already want to come back is the best thing we could hear. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

I stayed here for two nights. I’d like to thank the manager and all the staff for their wonderful hospitality. Although the weather wasn’t ideal, on the evening of my second day, the setting sun briefly shone into Sky Plaza, and the view of Mount Asahidake through the clouds is etched in my memory. I look forward to visiting again.
From StaffThank you for staying with us for two nights at Hakuba Sanso. Glad the manager and staff came across as so kind — that means a great deal to the whole team. Despite the unfortunate weather, that fleeting moment of sunset light breaking through at Sky Plaza on your second evening, with Mt. Asahi appearing through the clouds, sounds like a wonderful sight to have witnessed. Thank you for the photo too. We hope to see you again in the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

I happened to run into a fellow Taiwanese at the front desk. I’d like to thank them for their assistance with check-in—they were so warm and welcoming.
From StaffThank you for staying at Hakuba Sanso. We're glad our staff member from Taiwan happened to be there at check-in and could help with the process — that must have been a nice moment for her too. Your kind words about the warm, friendly service mean a lot to the whole team. We hope to see you again in the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

I chose a large shared room, but there was only enough space for about three people on two tatami mats, so it felt very cramped. It was a shame that the miso soup was lukewarm at both dinner and breakfast. All the staff worked efficiently and provided excellent customer service.
From StaffThank you for staying at Hakuba Sanso. Glad you found our staff efficient and attentive — that's encouraging for the whole team. We're sorry the miso soup at both dinner and breakfast wasn't served hot enough. We'll look at how we can make sure it reaches you nice and warm. Thank you for the photo too. We hope to see you again in the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

The reservation system was excellent; entering my course and companion information in advance made check-in go very smoothly. It was a shame I arrived later than planned and didn’t have time to browse the gift shop. There is Wi-Fi, but there were no signs in the hallways or common areas; I found the password at the front desk the next morning when I was checking out. It’s also great that, even though it’s on top of a mountain, drinking water is free and available from the tap. The meals were delicious, too. You can get unlimited refills of rice and miso soup!
From StaffThank you for staying at Hakuba Sanso. Glad that entering your route and companion details ahead of time through our reservation system made for a smooth check-in. Thanks for letting us know about the Wi-Fi password not being posted anywhere in the hallway or common room — we'll look at how we can make that easier to find. Also glad you appreciated the free drinking water and the free refills on rice and miso soup. Thank you for the photos too. We hope to see you again in the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

It took longer than I expected, and since there was almost no one behind me, I felt a little anxious. My phone battery also died, so I should have made sure to have a backup way to contact people just in case. Aside from the rice at dinner being a bit too soft—which I don’t usually like—the meal was delicious. Other than the weather, it was a great hike! Thank you very much.
From StaffThank you for staying at Hakuba Sanso and for sharing such a detailed account of your hike, along with the photos, the ridge views are wonderful. It sounds like the trail took longer than expected, and passing so few other hikers later on must have felt a bit unnerving. Phone battery is definitely something to watch closely in the mountains. We'll also take your comment about the rice being softer than you'd like on board. We're glad it was a good climb apart from the weather. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

The food was so delicious, I couldn’t believe it was cooked at a mountain lodge. The limited-edition beef stew, in particular, was absolutely fantastic. It was a real shame, though, that both the sunset and sunrise were obscured by fog, so we couldn’t enjoy the view. I’d love to stay at Hakuba Sanso again. Thank you very much!
From StaffThank you very much for staying at Hakuba Sanso! Thank you also for sharing your wonderful photos. Our staff really enjoyed seeing the delicious-looking beef stew, katsudon, and dessert. We're especially happy to hear that you thought our limited-time beef stew was outstanding. Your comment that it was hard to believe it was prepared in a mountain hut is a wonderful compliment for our kitchen team. Although the clouds hid the sunset and mountain views this time, we hope you'll return on a clear day to experience the spectacular scenery of the Japanese Alps. We look forward to welcoming you again!

One of our group members had injured their leg, and we were worried about whether they’d be able to make it down the mountain, but the lodge staff directed us to the infirmary. That was a huge help. Thanks to them, we were able to make it down safely despite the bad weather. Also, the food was so delicious—it was hard to believe it was from a mountain lodge. The place was well-maintained and felt very clean. We really appreciated the stove, too.
We're relieved that being able to point your injured member to the first-aid room was of some help during a worrying moment. Glad you all made it down safely despite the bad weather. Hearing that the food exceeded what you'd expect from a mountain lodge, along with your comments on the cleanliness, means a lot to our staff. Thank you for the photo as well. We're happy the stove was a welcome comfort too. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.
