I stayed overnight in a tent on September 19–20 as part of a hot spring therapy hiking trip. Although we arrived an hour earlier than the check-in time, it was a great help that we were allowed to use the lodge’s dining hall. Furthermore, as the number of hikers waiting to check in increased, the staff moved up the check-in time—this flexible response really demonstrated the high level of professionalism among the lodge staff. As for the most important aspect—the quality of the hot spring water—it was gentle on the body and enveloping, making for a highly satisfying experience.

Since the rooms were divided by group, it was great that I could sleep without worrying about my neighbors. The service was courteous, and the food was delicious. The baths go without saying—it was a great experience you can only have here. The hot water starting at 8:00 PM was the best. If I had to nitpick, I wish the gift shop would have sold beer and other alcoholic beverages a little later into the evening.

In the outdoor rest area, I’d be happy if there were laundry right in front of me and I could secure a spot in the drying room. I’d like to take a break while enjoying the view outside.

Because Yari Onsen Hut is built and taken down every year to withstand winter snow and avalanches, adding a drying room is difficult. There aren’t that many cabins with hot springs, so it was a great experience. I imagine it would be difficult during peak times, but I appreciated that they spaced out the cabins so that guests could have some privacy.

Above all, the hot springs♨️ were the best. The scenery and the starry sky were absolutely beautiful. I was so reluctant to head back down the mountain.

The mountain lodge’s standard amenities (lodging and meals) were nothing special—neither good nor bad—which feels like a bit of a waste, especially since the quality of the hot spring water is absolutely top-notch. For example, considering that the meals at Tengu Sanso, where I stayed the next day, were so good I genuinely thought, “This is delicious!”—there’s clearly room for improvement here. It feels like everything falls just short—and (with high hopes) I get the sense they could do even better. The deposit system is great. It’s become much easier to use. However, it was a bit of a hassle when I was told at check-in that I needed my reservation number or QR code—they wouldn’t accept my name alone. Having just climbed up, out of breath, and then being asked to fiddle with my smartphone was more stressful than I could have imagined. There’s no logical reason why I should have to do that myself. I’m deducting one point from the customer service score for this.

I stayed at the campsite. The site was spacious, and since a hot spring stream flows right beside it, I didn’t have to go all the way to the wash area just to wash my hands—it was very convenient. In addition to the famous open-air bath, there was also a women-only bath; since the water composition was different, I really enjoyed both.
Thank you for camping with us at Hakuba Yari Onsen. We’re glad you enjoyed the hot spring water flowing right by the site, as well as both the open-air bath and the women’s bath. Our hot spring flows naturally from the mountain, so its character changes from day to day with the weather. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps, to enjoy it once again.
