I’d heard that the building was taken down and rebuilt every season, so I was curious what kind of cabin it would be, but it felt very solidly built. The mattress laid on top of the straw mat was surprisingly comfortable to sleep on. It gets colder at night than at a mountain lodge, but wearing an extra layer solved the problem. The meals were delicious, and the staff were all friendly and approachable, creating a welcoming atmosphere that allowed us to have a wonderful time.

It was a shame there wasn't a drying room. I also felt the place was a bit cramped overall. Compared to other cabins in the Hakuba-kan Group, it seemed a bit pricey.
From StaffThank you for staying with us, and we’re sorry the lack of a drying room and the limited space did not meet your expectations. Hakuba Yari Onsen is located in an avalanche path, so no building can be left standing through the winter. Each year we build the hut from scratch after the snow melts and take it down again at the end of the season. This limits the size and facilities we can offer, but we put a great deal of effort into the hut every year to share a hot spring that can only be enjoyed in this very place. We’d be grateful for your understanding of these mountain conditions, and we hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

It was a wonderful hot spring that really helped me unwind. The open-air bath was, of course, delightful, and—though I didn’t know this until I got there—there was also a semi-open-air bath with a screened-in area. Even though it didn’t have a view, I appreciated that women could relax and bathe there without a swimsuit. The staff at the lodge all had lovely smiles, too.

I made a reservation for September 20–21. Check-in went very smoothly, and even when I was having a little trouble, the staff warmly helped me out!! I was really happy about that. And above all, the hot springs!! They were amazing… I’d only ever taken the route up from Oike in Hakuba, but I thought the route up from Sarukura would be nice, too.

There were five people in our section, but there were only three in the same section across from us. If they had split us into two groups of four, we would have been able to sleep comfortably. Also, there were other sections that weren’t filled to capacity.
Thank you for staying with us, and we’re sorry the uneven number of people in each section made your space feel cramped. Room allocations are based on factors such as group size, the makeup of each group, and arrival times, so the number of guests can vary from section to section. We’ll take your feedback into account as we work to help everyone rest as comfortably as possible. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.
