The restrooms are clean. The food is delicious. The staff are friendly and welcoming. It would have been nice if charging my phone had been free, though. It was a comfortable stay.

Not only were the restrooms clean, but the kitchen area was also heated from early in the morning—the attention to detail was even better than before. I had a wonderful time there, and it’s now one of the lodges I’d love to stay at again. Thank you to all the staff! 😊

Both the interior and exterior were tidy and clean. The room was peaceful, and I was able to rest well. The futon and the room were warm. The meals were delicious and well-balanced.

It’s been a few years since I last visited, and I was pleased to see that the restrooms had been beautifully renovated. Since construction work is going on day and night, I’m looking forward to seeing how the facilities improve in the future.

This was my first time staying in a twin room, and I was very satisfied with how well-equipped it was—just like a hotel. Although it was off-season with few guests, the staff’s service was excellent. I visited during the same time of year last year and this year, and I definitely hope to return next year. Finally, I was surprised to see how clean the restrooms had become—you’d never guess we were up in the mountains. Restrooms are often a concern when staying at mountain huts, but I was very pleased with them this time.

This was my first time visiting in June. Since it was before opening hours, I suppose it couldn’t be helped, but I was disappointed that the cake set wasn’t available yet. Still, I’m grateful for the delicious meal and the warm hospitality. They also held a lecture on alpine plants, making for a wonderful hiking trip. I understand that there are no restrooms at this time of year, but as a woman, it’s difficult to find a safe spot with stable footing where I can use a portable toilet, especially since I never know when someone else might show up. At Hakuba Oike Mountain Lodge, I asked a female staff member on the off chance if I could use the restroom, but she snapped at me, saying it wasn’t open yet—which completely ruined my good mood. Since the staff were chatting amiably among themselves, I was surprised by how harshly she spoke to me. I understand her point, but the staff members must use the restroom themselves, and since it’s a long hike, I think it would be fine to charge a fee and open at least the outdoor restroom. I realize that mountain huts play a vital role and their staff do difficult work, but I think the female staff member at Oike Mountain Lodge could stand to learn a bit more about customer service. Otherwise, it risks giving the impression that mountain huts are acting high and mighty.

Since it’s a mountain lodge, the menu is limited, but the curry for dinner was even more delicious than I expected. I had three helpings. There weren’t many guests, so it was nice that two of us could share a private room. They started requiring a reservation deposit this year, but I feel that 3,000 yen is too much. I wish they’d at least lower it to around 1,000 yen. When the fee is high, it makes it harder to cancel, and I think there will be climbers who push themselves even in bad weather. (I don’t know if that was the reason, but in fact, the day before, there was a mountain accident involving climbers who were presumably planning to stay at the lodge on the Great Snowfield due to bad weather.) Also, due to the reservation deposit system, I find it difficult to make group reservations, whether for private rooms or shared rooms. (Even though the deposit can be carried over in case of a cancellation, there’s no guarantee that the same group—with the same number of people—will be able to visit next time.) I hope they’ll improve the reservation system.

I stayed one night at Hakuba Sanso. I couldn’t find anywhere to charge my phone or take a shower. The meals were okay—except that the miso soup didn’t seem to be refillable—but breakfast came with fish, which I don’t usually eat. The staff didn’t remind me of the time when the power would be turned off. Wi-Fi was available, though the speed was a bit slow—still satisfactory, though. The staff gave me helpful advice on planning my hiking route, and I even got a room to myself. Crampons could be borrowed at this sanso and returned at another sanso for a fee of ¥1,000, though they weren’t particularly useful. I stayed at Hakuba Sanso for one night, but there were no places to charge my cell phone or shower facilities. The meals were decent, but it was a bit disappointing that I couldn’t get a refill of miso soup. However, it was nice that breakfast included a fish dish, which I don’t usually eat. The staff did not specifically inform me of the time when the power would be cut off. Wi-Fi was available; the speed was a bit slow but still acceptable. The staff provided helpful advice on planning hiking routes, and it was nice to have a private room. It was convenient to be able to rent crampons at one mountain lodge and return them at another (for a nominal fee of 1,000 yen), but in reality, they weren’t all that useful. Hakubasansō ni 1 haku sh

Hakuba Sanso is located at an altitude of 2,832 meters, where electricity and water are very limited.
