The facilities—including restrooms, a drying room, charging stations, and Wi-Fi—are exceptionally well-equipped. Dinner was delicious, and we could have as many servings as we wanted. The only downside was that, although there were only five male guests staying in the silkworm-bed-style dormitory that day, we were all assigned to the same bunk. When there’s space available, I’d like to be able to use the area more freely. I believe getting a good night’s sleep—without being disturbed by others’ breathing—is crucial for reducing the risk of getting lost in the mountains.

This was my first time staying at Goryu Sanso. I had to cancel once because of an approaching typhoon, but it was reassuring to know that I could make up to 10 free changes within the same season. In the end, I changed the date once, but after checking the weather forecast and deciding it looked like it might work out, I rebooked for the original dates and went. It was a bit of a shame that they didn’t have draft beer, but there were vending machines that accepted PayPay, and I could pay for the mountain lodge reservation by credit card. Above all, the restrooms were incredibly clean—the best I’ve ever seen in a mountain lodge. I was truly surprised by everything from the bidet to the heated toilet seat. I think even first-time mountain hut guests would find it quite comfortable if they book a private room. Perhaps because it was right after a typhoon and there weren’t many people when I visited, my partner and I were able to enjoy a spacious “silkworm room” (which sleeps seven) all to ourselves—I’m very grateful for that. While taking a beer break in the dining hall, a staff member told us, “There’s a ptarmigan out there,” and we were able to spot a pair of ptarmigans. If the weather had been clear, Mt. Goryu would undoubtedly be in my top five mountains. We took the Tomi Ridge round-trip route, which included some rocky sections, making for a fun climb.

I stayed in a "cage room," but it was way too cramped. It felt like three people were sleeping in a space meant for two. You can’t become a mountain lover in a place like that. Also, their slogan is “Love the Mountains, Love Sake,” but they only sell two types of alcohol—beer and chuhai—from vending machines, and the gift shop only carries single-cup sake. Calling it “for sake lovers” is a bit of a stretch. They should stock a wider variety.

In the checklist at the time of reservation, there was an item [Q1] ・・・・ for climbing in the lingering snow season, but I think it is insufficient. In addition, [Q2] I will wear shoes that allow me to properly attach crampons. ［Q3] Not only do I have ice axes and crampons, but I understand how to use them properly. I think we should add the following two items. On our way to Goryu-dake (五竜岳), we encountered a climber who was stuck on a traverse of a frozen stream. We asked him to kick in, but he was wearing soft-soled shoes and band crampons, so kicking in was ineffective (I wonder if he understood the meaning of "kick in" in the first place). ) I was also holding my ice axe incorrectly, so I could not get a good dagger position and barely made it through. I think it is very important to avoid such reckless climbers. Also, the dinner was delicious and I would be more than happy if it was warm.

Mount Goryu—a long-cherished dream. I was able to stay at the Goryu Mountain Lodge and had some wonderful encounters. It was great that the dormitory-style rooms were spacious since it was before peak season. I’d love to visit again if I get the chance. If I had to mention one thing, I felt it would be even more enjoyable if there were options other than beer and shochu highballs for dinner.
