The meal had already been served, and by the time I sat down, there was only a small amount of miso soup left in the pot, and it had gone cold—which was a shame. I’m sure they would have reheated it if I’d asked, but since I assumed they’d served it knowing it would get cold, I just ate it as it was. It was also a shame that there were no beverage vending machines. Since it’s a mountain lodge, I didn’t expect much beyond the bath, but there were a few minor points of dissatisfaction.

Since it was a weekend, I arrived around 1:30 p.m. and there were already many tents set up. With not many options left, the best spots were already taken, but I managed to find a flat, peaceful spot to pitch my tent and had a comfortable stay. Since the water must be boiled, I found that a bit of a hassle, but since I’d gathered information beforehand, I didn’t run into any real problems. I didn’t use the lodge or the snack bar, so I can’t comment on those, but given the location—a hollow that’s sheltered from strong winds—I think it’s a very pleasant place to stay. I imagine most people hike up from Tsugaike, and the crowd seems to range from novices to beginners.

Dinner was delicious! I’ve stayed at all kinds of mountain huts, but I felt this one crammed too many people into each room (it reminded me of the pre-COVID days). Narrow futons—about 60 centimeters wide?—were packed tightly together, so much so that when I turned on my side, the person next to me’s breath would brush against my face. It was hard to get a good night’s sleep, and I couldn’t really shake off my physical fatigue. Perhaps someone as weak as me doesn’t really have the right to climb mountains, but I think there’s been a recent trend of more hikers like me. I really hope they’ll make some improvements.

It had the atmosphere of a mountain hut from 30 years ago, with old-fashioned rooms featuring narrow futons and damp comforters. The restrooms were also old-style, including squat toilets. However, it was nice that we could use hot water and drinking water for free. We stayed at Tsugaike Hutte the day before, and even though the room rates were the same, we felt a huge difference in the facilities. We’re in our 70s, so we’re grateful they gave us a room on the lower level. I’d long looked forward to a relaxing stay at Hakuba Oike Sanso, but I wasn’t able to enjoy a pleasant and comfortable experience. Given the lodge’s location, perhaps this is just something we have to accept.

I was completely exhausted from the heat, but the delicious dinner and the view of Oike Lake really soothed me. I was grateful that they provided tea and hot water. Even though it was called a “large room,” it was actually quite cozy, accommodating just six people, so I had a great time chatting with the others in my group—it was a wonderful encounter. It was a truly lovely time. I’d love to come back in the fall to see the scenery, which I imagine will be different from the summer. Thank you very much.

I stayed in a tent for two nights. I ordered boxed meals for both breakfast and lunch each day. As a customer, I didn’t expect the breakfast and lunch menus to be the same. Please address this issue.

I really enjoyed the meal. I was happy to be able to casually use the dining hall and coffee shop. I also appreciated having hot water and cold water available in the kettle. The staff were friendly and kind, always greeting me with a smile. Thank you very much.
