The hot springs were amazing—especially the indoor bath with its milky-white water; it was absolutely fantastic. The hamburger steak for dinner was incredibly delicious. I came here for the hot springs, and next time I’d like to stay in a tent.

    From Staff

We are so glad the milky white waters of our onsen lived up to being the highlight of your visit. Thank you also for the kind words about the hamburg steak at dinner. We look forward to your next visit, camping this time, for a different way to enjoy Yari Onsen. Thank you for the photos as well.

We're camping in a tent. The site is flat and relatively spacious, so it's easy to set up camp. You check in first, then you can pitch your tent wherever you like. With the sound of the snowmelt stream and the flowing hot spring water, I don't think you'll hear your neighbors snoring or passing gas (lol).

    From Staff

Glad the tent sites worked well for you — flat ground and the freedom to pick your spot right by reception is one of the nice things about camping at Yari Onsen. The sound of the snowmelt stream and the hot spring running nearby as a natural cover for neighboring snores does sound like a pretty good deal. Thanks for the photos too. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

Even though it’s a mountain cabin that gets torn down and rebuilt every year, I was able to sleep soundly. I was also really impressed by how delicious the meals were. The hot springs were amazing. The mixed-gender bath threw me off a bit, so next time I’ll bring my swim trunks.

    From Staff

We're glad you were able to sleep soundly and enjoyed the meals so much. It sounds like you really made the most of the hot spring too. We understand the mixed bathing setup may have caught you off guard, and we appreciate you sharing that honestly. Thanks also for the photo. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

Pros ↓ ・There’s a hot spring ・Plenty of water ・Not far from the trailhead ・You can sleep well because the sound of the flowing hot spring water drowns out other people’s noises Cons ↓ First and foremost, the price is high. It’s been going up every year, which I think is excessive. It’s 4,500 yen per person for tent camping, and even if two people share a two-person tent, it’s still 4,500 yen × 2. They really should offer a discount for companions who aren’t pitching a tent. The open-air bath closes at 7:00 a.m., so you can’t take it easy in the morning. This year, there was only one water source to adjust the hot spring temperature, so it was too hot. Two years ago, there were two pipes, and adjusting the flow made the temperature just right. Even though I’d already paid the fee by credit card in advance, I feel that check-in starting at 11:00 is a bit too late. The golden rule for mountain trips is to arrive early, and since quite a few people had already arrived early, I feel like I wasted some time. I hope things improve for the better next year.

    From Staff

Thank you for the kind words about the hot spring, the plentiful water, and how quiet it was to sleep. We also take seriously your feedback on pricing, the open-air bath's morning hours, the number of water containers for adjusting the temperature, and the check-in time. Thank you for the photo as well. We'll use your comments to inform how we run things going forward. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

It was my first visit. The hot spring I’d come to see offered a greater sense of openness than I’d expected. I was surprised to find it completely exposed right next to the road, but I didn’t let that bother me and ended up soaking in it several times. The water quality was just right; while the temperature likely varies depending on the season and other factors, water from the adjustment valve was being added, so I think it was a bit on the hot side but still at a comfortable temperature. I was surprised to see more foreign guests than I expected—probably due to the influence of some Southeast Asian influencers—though I think almost all the people camping in tents were Japanese. Since I was camping in a tent, I can’t rate the cabins, but I bought a beer at the shop. That post-bath drink was truly special. If I ever get the chance, I’d love to visit again. There’s plenty of water, and it’s sheltered from the wind, so I had a very comfortable stay.

    From Staff

We're glad that on your first visit, the open-air feel of the hot spring exceeded what you expected. We take note of your comment about the visibility from the trail. Glad you were able to enjoy soaking multiple times regardless. That beer after the bath sounding so special made us smile too. It's great to hear the plentiful water and the campsite's shelter from wind added to a comfortable stay. Thank you for the photos as well. We look forward to your next visit. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

The hot spring house was truly amazing—we got to soak for a long time, and they even arranged different private sessions for us. The staff were all very friendly, the mountain lodge was cozy and comfortably laid out, and the food was delicious—we could even get refills on rice and soup. It was pure bliss.

    From Staff

We're delighted you found the hot spring truly the best, and that having a dedicated time slot added to the experience. Hearing our staff described as kind is a real encouragement to us. Glad the lodge felt warm and comfortable, and that you enjoyed refills of rice and soup too. Being called a moment of pure bliss is a real honor. Thank you for the photos as well. Check-in for the tent site was at 11:00 a.m., but since at regular mountain huts you’re usually expected to check in as soon as you arrive, I found it very inconvenient that there was a set check-in time. The hot springs are wonderful.

    From Staff

We take your comment about the fixed check-in time for camping seriously and appreciate you raising it. We're delighted to hear you found the hot spring wonderful. Thank you for the photos as well. We hope to welcome you back to the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.

Compared to Enzanso and Hakuba Sanso, the rooms are smaller, and I do feel there are some shortcomings in the facilities—such as the lack of a drying room, the outdated toilets, and no Wi-Fi. However, considering that this is a heavy snowfall area and the mountain hut is dismantled and rebuilt every year, I think the facilities are adequate. On top of that, I really love the delicious meals, the staff’s just-right level of attentiveness, and—above all—being able to relax in the open-air bath with its breathtaking views!

    From Staff

Thank you for visiting Yari Onsen Hut. While the facilities may feel a bit lacking in some ways, we're truly grateful you understood the reason behind it — that this whole place gets rebuilt from scratch every year due to the heavy snowfall here. Glad you found the food delicious, and that the distance our staff kept felt just right — that means a lot to the whole team. Also happy the open-air bath with its stunning views became a favorite of yours. Thank you for the photos too. We hope to see you again in the mountains of Hakuba, in the Japanese Alps.
