Yari Onsen had been a long-held dream of mine. It was a very satisfying hike that allowed me to recover from the fatigue of the traverse from Hakuba Sanso. The warm hospitality of the staff at the hot spring lodge also left a lasting impression. I’ll definitely visit again.

We set out from the Hakuba Yari Onsen Cabin on a traverse toward Hakuba Sanso, but had to turn back due to bad weather and returned to Yari Onsen. When we were having trouble because there was no cell service, a staff member called for us and helped us change our reservation, which was a huge help. Thank you very much. As for the guest room, I understand there’s no partition, but I think it would have been nice to have a curtain in front.

The water quality at the hot spring is excellent. You can’t wash your hair or body, but that’s to be expected since it’s in the mountains. As for the rooms, I was surrounded by older men, and since there were no curtains or other privacy screens, I felt like the guy across from me was staring at me, which was uncomfortable. Since we were a group of women, it was even more so, but I always wish they’d at least have separate areas for men and women. I also wish they’d require people to wear underwear in the hot springs. It feels like a place where public indecency could happen, which is unpleasant. As a hot spring lover, I give the water quality high marks, and the staff are friendly—so I give them high marks too—but the fact that it’s dominated by middle-aged men is just as off-putting.

Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the miso soup in particular was packed with ingredients. For dinner, we could even get seconds of the hayashi rice, which was greatly appreciated by us hikers. The rooms were also neat and tidy. All the staff members were cheerful and handled everything efficiently, which was a big help. The baths were fantastic. I went in several times. Since there are women-only hours, I was able to fully enjoy both baths.

I got injured while climbing, and once I arrived at the lodge, the staff took great care of me and attended to my needs with the utmost kindness. I am truly grateful. It was a shame I couldn’t take a bath because of my injury, but the meals were delicious, and I had a very comfortable stay. I would definitely like to visit again.

・After reviewing the details following dinner, we realized that having breakfast at 5:30 might mean we’d miss the ferry, so we were very grateful that they kindly agreed to change our breakfast to a boxed meal. Thanks to that, we made it in time for the prestigious car ferry and returned home to Fukuoka safely. ・There was an open-air bath, which helped us feel refreshed.

A cancellation opened up, and I was able to snag a spot by chance. My legs were at their limit, and I wasn’t confident I could make the descent to Sarukura, so this was a huge help. Since I didn’t have a swimsuit for the hot spring, I waited until no one else was in the water to get in. It was hot, but the water felt great and soothed the pain in my legs.
