Since the room wasn't partitioned, the person next to me had left their belongings scattered all over the place, spilling over into my space. After lights out and before wake-up time, someone was talking loudly.

There’s nothing better than soaking in a hot spring while taking in the magnificent scenery. In the mixed-gender hot spring, a high percentage of both men and women wore swimsuits; at certain times, everyone was in a swimsuit, so being the only one completely naked actually made me feel a bit uncomfortable. (I didn’t go in.) Dinner was delicious—the beef hash was so good I had seconds. The place was fully booked that day, so we ended up sleeping five to a section, and it was a bit cramped because we were so close to our neighbors. (It was especially tough hearing their snoring right next to me.)

A cancellation opened up, and I was able to snag a spot by chance. My legs were at their limit, and I wasn’t confident I could make the descent to Sarukura, so this was a huge help. Since I didn’t have a swimsuit for the hot spring, I waited until no one else was in the water to get in. It was hot, but the water felt great and soothed the pain in my legs.

We set out from the Hakuba Yari Onsen Cabin on a traverse toward Hakuba Sanso, but had to turn back due to bad weather and returned to Yari Onsen. When we were having trouble because there was no cell service, a staff member called for us and helped us change our reservation, which was a huge help. Thank you very much. As for the guest room, I understand there’s no partition, but I think it would have been nice to have a curtain in front.

The water quality at the hot spring is excellent. You can’t wash your hair or body, but that’s to be expected since it’s in the mountains. As for the rooms, I was surrounded by older men, and since there were no curtains or other privacy screens, I felt like the guy across from me was staring at me, which was uncomfortable. Since we were a group of women, it was even more so, but I always wish they’d at least have separate areas for men and women. I also wish they’d require people to wear underwear in the hot springs. It feels like a place where public indecency could happen, which is unpleasant. As a hot spring lover, I give the water quality high marks, and the staff are friendly—so I give them high marks too—but the fact that it’s dominated by middle-aged men is just as off-putting.

Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the miso soup in particular was packed with ingredients. For dinner, we could even get seconds of the hayashi rice, which was greatly appreciated by us hikers. The rooms were also neat and tidy. All the staff members were cheerful and handled everything efficiently, which was a big help. The baths were fantastic. I went in several times. Since there are women-only hours, I was able to fully enjoy both baths.

I got injured while climbing, and once I arrived at the lodge, the staff took great care of me and attended to my needs with the utmost kindness. I am truly grateful. It was a shame I couldn’t take a bath because of my injury, but the meals were delicious, and I had a very comfortable stay. I would definitely like to visit again.

A mountain lodge known for its hot springs with an abundant flow of water. The staff are very helpful. The food is delicious, too.

From Tsugaike to Yarigatake Onsen, we stayed at Hakuba-kan for three nights. Amid the weekend crowds of hikers, the staff at every mountain hut treated us with a smile and genuine kindness. In particular, after descending a slippery chain section during a traverse that turned into a thunderstorm, the hot spring felt like a godsend—we were truly grateful. On July 27, as I was descending after the rain had stopped, I looked up at the Yarigatake Onsen Hut clinging to the rocky slopes of the snowfield beneath a blue sky, and thought of all the staff who maintain the huts and trails. Helicopters were coming and going, but I hope to continue preparing thoroughly, acting cautiously, and enjoying “mountaineering” together with everyone who supports us in the mountains. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for staying with us across three nights, from Tsugaike all the way to Yari Onsen Hut! We're so glad every hut greeted you with a smile despite the crowds of weekend climbers. After descending the chain sections in the middle of a thunderstorm during your traverse, finding the hot spring waiting must have felt like salvation itself — that really moved us.
